The Best way to Prevent Fruit Tree Pests Without Chemicals
Everybody is looking for a silver bullet when it comes to fruit tree pests. Gardeners around the world are saying, "All we want is a simple, inexpensive, way to eliminate any and all fruit tree pests without the use of harmful chemicals." Do you want a million dollars tax free while we're at it? Sounds pretty ridiculous huh? This is not a silver bullet, but I came across the closest thing.

If you have any life experience whatsoever, you have learned that there is no silver bullet when it comes to solving problems. You've probably seen the sign hanging in your car mechanic's shop that says, "We provide fast, quality work, for cheap, but you can only pick two!" This suggests that if you want your job done fast and with quality workmanship, then you're going to have to pay top dollar for it. On the flip side. If you want inexpensive work then you are going to have to sacrifice speed or quality. The choice is yours.
Fruit Tree Covers are a simple way to protect your trees. 2-3 weeks after your blossoms are pollinated, you simply cover your tree and let this physical barrier work all season long. Do you know of any sprays that work that long? If you have a really big tree, you will need a friend or family member to help you get the cover over the canopy, but there is a fruit tree cover for almost every size tree. Once covered, you simply cinch up the bottom and your tree will be protected all season long. When harvest time comes, you simply un-cinch and uncover your tree.
Ok, so fruit tree covers are not cheap. Compared to a 4-in-1 fruit tree spray concentrate, they are significantly more, but Fruit Tree Covers are made of a proprietary, high quality material, that will last for many years. It's an investment. Pay for it once and use it year after year. If you factor in the lifetime utility of it, the cost might not be too far from years of chemical purchases and clogged sprayers.
Fruit Tree Covers are highly effective at completely eliminating most fruit tree pests...well the ones with legs that is. From codling moth larva, to cherry fruit fly maggots, these covers will protect your fruit from these unwanted pests. Although squirrels and roof rats can chew through the fabric, once your tree is covered the rodents seem to leave it alone to find easier meals. Deer? Yup! Like I said earlier, If it has legs it won't have access to your tree.
In addition to protecting your fruit from bugs, rodents, and deer, the covers protect your fruit from birds. Cherries, peaches, apples, and pears can all get ruined by marauding flocks of birds that seem to show up the day before you plan to harvest. No spray regimen can protect your fruit from birds and much of the netting on the market used to protect trees from birds will trap and entangle birds, killing them by starvation and or broken wings.
Fruit Tree Covers are also highly effective at protecting your fruit trees from hail damage and sun scald.
So, what are the limitations? Bacteria, fungi, and viral diseases aren't eliminated. You will still need to treat your trees with dormant oil sprays and copper, if you live in humid areas where these diseases are common. In addition, soil bound pathogens can still attack your tree. Fruit tree covers are designed to be a valuable tool in your integrative pest management strategy.
I will admit that I had a few concerns about the product before I got my hands on one. I manage a small orchard at the mouth of a canyon, high in the Rocky Mountains. It's not uncommon to get wind gusts and micro-bursts. It seems like a fabric cover would turn my trees into kites. Turns out the fabric is thick, yet breathable. These covers will still allow for good air flow around your tree. You really need to put your hands on one to understand. It would probably take a tornado to cause any damage to your covered fruit trees. And, in that situation, the tornado would probably just pull the covers off the top of your trees.

My second concern regarding the fruit tree cover was the visual aspect of it. I pride myself in my ability to prune a fruit tree to make it both productive and aesthetically beautiful. I don't like the idea of covering my work of art. Well, do you want bushels of beautiful fruit or a beautiful tree? If it's the latter you want, then plant a Japanese Maple.
Sounds like a pretty good product huh? It checks almost every box and is the closest thing to a silver bullet. Simple, high quality, durable, and, if used with the right tools, will eliminate almost every fruit tree pest without the use of harmful chemicals. Purchase yours today!
HI,
ReplyDeleteI have been using fruit tree nets here in Queensland,Australia for a couple of years now. Predominantly they are to stop the fruit fly which decimates fruit and vegetable crops here. I can say that I have had pretty much 100% success so far.
Thanks for you comment John. I'm glad to hear that this technique works all over the world!
